First, the economy, Next, the internet, last The World!!

28 Aug

Ah, Washington, land of the power nabbing elite.

The aliens will eat my brain

Not content with control over banks, auto industry, healthcare industry, wall street, executive pay, and anything else they can get their hands into; Capitol hill is busy drafting (or rather re-drafting) a bill to give the White House control over non-governmental critical infrastructure systems or private computer networks in the case of a “cybersecurity emergency”.

What the heck is a QR Code?

27 Aug

QR Codes are a form of 2D barcodes developed and popular in Japan.  Found on websites, advertisements, business cards and many other things.

QR Code for this post

In the sidebar of this website you will find a QR code for each page.  If you have a QR Code reader on your mobile phone you can just take a picture of the code and you will be directed to the URL you scanned the code from on your mobile device.

This is just a silly toy on a blog like this but can be good for things like your business cards, especially if you do mobile development or just want to look nerdy.

Alton Brown: Safe and Scary Kitchen Hacks – Gizmodo

25 Aug

Alton Brown is my culinary hero. Food messiah. What-have-you.

He recently did an interview on Gizmodo with Wilson Rothman about his famous “repurposing” of things to use in the kitchen.  Nothing too wacky, but a good read nevertheless.

Google buttons explained

24 Aug

I know this is old news, but I’m going to blog about it anyway as I don’t want to forget it.  I love the Gmail gradient buttons and the fact that they do not use images makes it about one thousand times better in my view.

Gmail buttons

Douglas Bowman, the lead visual designer for Google for a few years had a hand in creating the latest iteration and and blogged about how the technique was created, why it was created, and the entire creative process from beginning to end.

When I say end, I mean the end of his involvement.  If you view the source of Gmail or any other google app that used the technique, you will see a few changes from what Douglas created.

I certainly didn’t create the concept of custom buttons at Google. Nor did I write the final code that made it into production. I merely initiated a couple steps to improve the methods we use to render custom buttons. My portion of the iteration is what’s documented here. There were many other steps in making these buttons a reality.

Great, Free Color Schemer for the colorly challenged

24 Aug

I’ve had quite a few “Color Scheme Generators” in my bookmarks for years, though most of them leave a lot to be desired.  Color Scheme Designer is the newest one to catch my eye.  The amount of options you have with this app is astounding.

From creating and tweaking your color scheme to your hearts content, to a live preview of how it would look on a typical website (both light and dark versions), to exporting the scheme in any way you would ever need, this app provides it all.

Color Scheme Designer certainly goes to the top of that bookmark list.
