Google’s Response to Chinese Attack, or “Go Google!”

14 Jan

Google has detected what appears to be a cyber attack on both it and other US based companies from somewhere in China. The goal of the attack is reported to be information on human rights activists both in the country and abroad. Easy to see the writing on the wall there. What was Google’s response? Public disclosure and the policy change of being unwilling to censor for the Chinese Government anymore (at least on Google.cn, who knows about Android Market and other such Google endeavors). This of course may mean not having anything in China anymore and that seems OK with Google.

I must take this moment to applaud Google for standing up for Freedom of Speech finally even though it may cost them a significant amount of money.

You can read more on this issue at the Official Google Blog where the story originally broke.

Thank you Google for making my day.

OpenInternet.gov launches

21 Sep

Earlier today, I mentioned the FCC statements about an open internet.  While interesting, there isn’t much there to go on.  What I missed though was the launching of OpenInternet.gov.  OpenInternet.gov is a beta site who’s primary purpose is to bring the public into the discussion about how to go about this.

I’m going to follow this closely as it will have a large impact on what the Internet will be in the future.  Feel free to launch into the discussion as we need all the voices we can get involved in order to see this go well.

Also, it’s nice to see the Obama administration, at least through other government agencies, bringing the public into discussions in what appears to be a positive way.  Lets hope the FCC listens to those who this will affect, both consumers and businesses.

Google Public Policy Blog: FCC announces plan to protect access to an open Internet

21 Sep

comicComic from the most excellent blog Geek and Poke.

I came across this while doing my rounds.  Though at first blush I always cringe at the idea of any government agency getting more power or infringing on the free market.  Much of the problem stems from government enforced monopolies to begin with so minimizing the damage makes a certain amount of sense.

Excerpt and link after the break.

NASA is too good at faking things

04 Sep

Not only did they lie about the moon lading and cover it up for the last 40 years, they actually put equipment on the moon to keep us off the trail!

The Indian Space Research Organization had a lunar orbiter named Chandrayaan-1.  A wildly successful mission, Earth lost communication with the orbiter last Saturday.

One of the last of 7,000 pictures sent back to earth included the Apollo 15 landing site.

First, the economy, Next, the internet, last The World!!

28 Aug

Ah, Washington, land of the power nabbing elite.

The aliens will eat my brain

Not content with control over banks, auto industry, healthcare industry, wall street, executive pay, and anything else they can get their hands into; Capitol hill is busy drafting (or rather re-drafting) a bill to give the White House control over non-governmental critical infrastructure systems or private computer networks in the case of a “cybersecurity emergency”.
